Watershed Moment For Margs Winery

It was yet another watershed moment for local Margaret River cabernet following one winery’s dominance at the Perth Royal Wine Show 2012.

Watershed Wines’ Awakening Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 outshined hundreds of wines from across Australia to win the Best Wine of the Show.

The news article “Watershed moment for Margaret River winery” has full details on this story. It says the following: “The same wine also won Best Western Australian Wine, Best Red Table Wine, Best Western Australian Dry Red Table Wine, Best 2010 Vintage Dry Red Table Wine and Best Cabernet Sauvignon. The success continues the glory for West Australian cabernet, with the variety a shining light on the national scene as WA enjoys a sixth continuous bumper vintage.” http://www.news.com.au/national/watershed-moment-for-margaret-river-winery/story-fndo4e3y-1226472874231

Severine Logan, head winemaker at Watershed Premium Wines, said she was amazed by the overwhelming success of the “baby of the stable”. She said, “We aim to create a wine with long line, elegant and with power. To be honest we haven’t had a bad vintage since 2007 and this 2010 vintage is a very elegant one.”

Redmond Sweeny, president of Wines WA, said, “Watershed’s success here has reaffirmed WA’s national dominance in the Cabernet Sauvignon category.”

John Hanley, head of the judging panel, summed up the success of WA by saying that it was just an indication of things to come. He noted, “We’re bound to see a lot more awards coming our way. WA should be proud of what they’ve done here.”

Success at the Perth Royal Wine Show wasn’t just limited to cabernet. Other varieties from WA also performed superbly across various categories.

“Cabernet obviously did exceptionally well; however, WA did do well across the board in the reds and 2012 whites,” said head judge Chris Hatcher.

Matilda’s Estate won the award for the most successful exhibitor processing below 300 tonnes.

Baileys of Glenrowan was the exhibitor with five or more judged entries achieving the highest average points.
