Sam Worthington, who hails from Rockingham in Western Australia, made a big name for himself in the massive Hollywood hit “Avatar.” Now the 34 year old star is returning to his roots to play a surfing photographer and journalist in the movie “Drift” which is said to portray the huge growth of surfing into an international sport. Entertainment Weekly recently named Worthington as the highest-grossing star under 40 thanks to his string of hits like “Terminator Salvation,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Avatar.”

Margaret River Surf

Sam Worthington in Margaret River is likely to be a huge breakthrough for tourism in the region,  and it has been suggested that the movie could bring international recognition for the Margaret River region similar to the boost that “Lord of the Rings” brought for New Zealand. Surfing in the Margaret River region has come a long way since its early days in the 60’s when it was discovered by the surfing sub-culture. Since then the area has become renowned as a premium surfing spot, and has been featured in a string of movies. “The World Stormrider Guide” and Mark Warren’s “Atlas of Australian Surfing” both highlighted the region’s world-class surf, as well as Hollywood movies like “Sabotaj” (1999) and “Gripping Stuff 2” (1991), but this is the first big budget production to hit the region.

Impact on Margaret River Tourism

The benefits of a major movie like this in the Margaret River are tremendous, not just for the long term tourism potential, but during filming as well. There will be a significant influx of people involved in the shooting coming into the region which will provide a boost to accommodation and catering, and locals should also get a chance to feature as surfing extras.

The producer, Tim Duffy, is expected in the region in mid-December to begin checking out filming locations and meet with local businesses and authorities. Filming is expected to commence in March which will allow it to coincide with the biggest surfing event of the year, the Margaret River Pro.
