Polo Team Emerges Victorious In Hard Fought Final

After an arduous weekend of polocrosse and a close final against Kojonup, the Margaret River polocrosse team won the State championships last weekend in Perth.

With coach Barry Butterly utilising his extensive experience and knowledge, the team displayed some brilliant teamwork and managed to beat all opponents in the C-grade contest.

The news article “Polo team win tough final” has full details on this story. It says, “Barry has played for Australia with local polocrosse legend Paul Brennan, now of Jesters Flat Polocrosse, where anyone wishing to try their hand at a truly Australian sport has the chance to learn and have some fun. The win was a fabulous boost for Polocrosse in the South West and will hopefully entice homegrown young talent such as Emily Walsh and Justin Buchanan back to the region.” http://www.margaretrivermail.com.au/story/406748/polo-team-win-tough-final/?cs=1555

With just minor changes to the lineup, the team hopes to continue its winning streak at the Kojonup tournament in two weeks time.

About the Margaret River Polocrosse Club:

The Margaret River Polocrosse Club is one of the pioneering sports clubs in the south west corner of WA. It was founded in 1950 when members from Bunbury paid a visit to introduce the sport to local riders. With six players, including Cliff Furniss and Brian Garstone, getting the hang of the sport, they toured Kojonup just 12 months later and managed to win the B-grade contest.

The Margaret River Polocrosse Club experienced a glorious era during the 70’s and 80’s with their A-grade team winning all tournaments it participated in during 1984. ┬áThe team then went on to win the Yeenyellup A-grade Cup in Kojonup for the sixth consecutive time in 1986. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000 with massive success as it slapped together an A-grade team and faced Kojonup for the title. Margaret River beat Kojonup by six goals.

The World Cup Irish team paid a visit to the Margaret River Polocrosse Club in 2003 to play some exhibition matches. Almost all members left or retired after 2003, with the only exception of Marine Davis. The club was restarted in 2008 and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010.

With some new members, the club has started to find strength, but is always open to new members. Those interested in joining can either contact Darren Martin on 9757 4087 or Marina Davis on 9758 8889 for enquiries.
