Ironman Western Australia sees exciting action in 2010, rapidly sells out for 2011

The Ironman Western Australia is one of the most gruelling events in Australian sport, with a 3.8 km swim in Geographe Bay, a 180.2 km bike race, and finishing with a 42.2 km run. Any one of these events would test the mettle of most athletes; combine them into one day and it’s a serious undertaking.

The Ironman Western Australia 2010 was held on December 5, 2010, and was won by a pair of Western Australian pro triathletes, Mr. Courtney Ogden from Katanning (who won the men’s race in 8 hours, 14 minutes) and Ms. Kate Bevilacqua from Perth (who won the women’s event in 9 hours, 19 minutes). Bevilacqua made a dramatic finish to the race, collapsing unconscious as she crossed the finish line.

Preparations are already underway for the 2011 event, with all registration spots selling out only five hours after their release on December 15th, 2010. Many would-be competitors will not be able to register due to the high demand, most of them are international athletes disadvantaged by their time zone. Unfortunately for them, there are no waiting lists for this competition, so they will need to wait until 2012 to get an entry in the prestigious Ironman Western Australia.

What to expect from Ironman Western Australia 2011

With over 1500 athletes waiting to come to Busselton for irm 2011, the competition from December 4th next year is likely to be at least as exciting as this year’s event.

The stakes are high for those competing in Ironman Western Australia 2011, as the competitors will have the chance to get one of the 40 qualifying slots for the 2012 Ford Ironman World Championship held in Hawaii..

If you’re a sports fan and want to catch the action, the 2011 triathlon might be an ideal opportunity to plan a holiday to the region. In addition to having the possibility to admire the pristine ocean and scenic landscapes surrounding Busselton, you can indulge in tasty Western Australia cuisine and try the well known Margaret River wines.

The Ironman Western Australia is open to anyone above the age of 18 who wants to take the challenge. While there are no conditions prior to registration, organizers recommend that the contestants have competed in a shorter triathlon, preferably Ironman 70.3 before joining the Ironman Western Australia.
