Drift Continues To Enthrall

The Margaret River region set the backdrop to Australian surf movie “Drift” that premiered in cinemas nationwide on Thu, May 02nd. The movie stars Aussie actor Sam Worthington, Aaron Glenane, Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel.

The news article “Margaret River film, Drift, makes waves on silver screen” has all the information you need about this movie. It says, “Drift is set in 1972 and tells the story of the Kelly brothers as they start a new life in a remote Australian coastal town. They come up against suspicious locals, killer waves and ruthless bikers as they struggle to kick-start a new business based on surfing, their greatest passion.” http://www.margaretrivermail.com.au/story/1471618/margaret-river-film-drift-makes-waves-on-silver-screen/?cs=1177

Based on true tales from that era, Drift is an action-packed story about a complex family of outsiders struggling to break away from their troubled past and build a successful futureā€¦ chancing upon the global multi-billion dollar surf culture that we all know today.

Busselton teenager Sean Keenan, who previously acted in Australian children’s TV series Lockie Leonard, had a role in Drift and said that he had a great time working with directors Ben Nott and Morgan O’Neill.

“My other cast members were heaps of fun to be around. It all went by pretty quickly and I’m looking forward to seeing the final product,” Sean said after the recording.

Meanwhile, under-18 state champion Mikaela Greene of Yallingup acted as stunt double in Drift. Mikaela, who was 17 years old at the time of production, said that she had gone to support her sister Eliza in a surf contest when she received the call from the producers.

“I was really ecstatic when they asked me and it was too big an opportunity to pass up,” Mikaela said.

A special ceremony was held last month in Yallingup where members of the local community mingled with the cast of Drift before enjoying a preview screening. Around 1300 guests attended the event including Myles Pollard.

Drift was given a thumbs-up by Augusta Margaret River Shire CEO Gary Evershed who saw the movie while on vacation in Cannes.

“The surfing footage and local scenery are amazing but it quickly evolves into a serious drama featuring the two Kelly brothers played by Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel, with Sam Worthington playing a roaming surfing nomad,” Evershed said.
