Lunar Circus Summer School – 20th to 24th January 2013

January 20, 2013 - January 24, 2013

“It’s important that children continue to exercise during the school holidays,” says senior researcher.

Just because children are on holidays, it doesn’t mean they should stop exercising, says Dr Lydia Hearn, Senior Research Fellow at the Edith Cowan University School of Exercise and Health Sciences.
“Most of the organised team sports go into recess over the holidays, but there are so many other things we can do to keep children active,” she says. “It’s a wonderful time of year for lots of swimming, or playing with a Frisbee in a park. You can also book your kids into some of the great activities that happen over the holidays, such as circus classes down in Margaret River.”
Matthew Yates, director of the Lunar Circus in Margaret River, says their annual circus ‘summer school’ is very popular. “Children and adults from all over Australia attend the classes,” he says. “At any one time, there’s a choice of about fifteen different classes running, so there’s something for everyone, no matter what their skill or fitness level.”
The Lunar Circus offers onsite camping, so families can stay right at the circus for the full experience. Classes offered include tumbling, silks, trapeze, flying trapeze, teeterboard, mini tramp, juggling, acrobalance, adagio, Chinese Pole, hula hooping, unicycling and more, as well as general circus classes for those that want a sample of everything.
Mr Yates says that a great thing about circus is that anyone can become highly skilled. “You don’t need to be a super flexible athlete to excel at circus, that’s just one aspect. There are so many other disclipines that can be learned, and the main requirement is determination and persistence.”
The Lunar Circus Summer School runs from 7th to 11th January, and 14th to 18th January. Festival training classes run from 20th to 24th January. The Western Australian Circus Festival runs from 26th – 28th January, in Karridale, near Margaret River. All weekend tickets include free camping; tickets are available from www.lunarcircus.com.
