What are the options for Margaret River weddings?

Margaret River weddings have become increasingly popular as a special destination for “the big day.”

A couple’s wedding day is a highly personal event which every bride and groom want to be unique, memorable, and representative of their values and aspirations. This is something which anyone who has been married can relate to, even if they did not have an elaborate wedding themselves.

With this in mind Margaret River weddings have become increasingly creative and diverse in their offerings; our region is still proud of its local roots, and from my short time here I understand that many businesses are open to accommodate the bride and groom’s special requests.

Margaret River Bride & Groom

Some of the most popular requests for Margaret River weddings are:

Winery: Hire a winery for your special day – some of the best places for Margaret River weddings are the region’s many wineries and estate vineyards. You can host your guests in an elegant private setting with gorgeous outdoor scenery and catered gourmet meals. Brides and grooms can tie the knot at Knotting Hill, host a wedding ceremony and/or reception at Leeuwin Estate Winery, and others.

Brewery: What Australian wedding would be complete without some cold beer? You might as well host your wedding right on-site at the brewery, and get started on the celebration as soon as possible! Cowaramup Brewery and Duckstein Brewery provide venues for Margaret River weddings and receptions as part of their function/event hosting services.

At a resort: Couples who want their Margaret River weddings to be a full-on “destination event” can host the ceremony, reception, meals, and provide accommodation for guests all in one place by hiring a local resort.  Bunker Bay is a favourite for many wanting a wedding by the beach where everyone can stay on site or locally.

Traditional Homestead: Most farmstays and homesteads do not specifically advertise their availability for Margaret River weddings, so it is up to the individual couples to find a farmstay or homestead and ask the owners if they can host a wedding there.  I personally have played the bagpipes for a wedding at Gilgara Retreat on Caves Road, and it was a great setting, with close family able to stay on site.

Beach: For Margaret River weddings on the beach, it is often up to the clergy member or celebrant officiating at the ceremony.  Many marrying couples get photos taken by the water, but most ceremonies do not take place on the beach. Bunker Bay is a popular spot for wedding photos on the beach.

Photography: Several local photographers offer professional services to document the special day.

  • 😉 Ben Knapinski: One of WA’s own photographers, Ben Knapinski has gained immense popularity due to his professionalism and class. His images are boldly erratic and diverse, which range from smooth and simple compositions to some very detailed, wide scenes. Ben Knapinski regularly does lots of breathtaking shots across the state.

About Benji

I am married and live on a farm near Margaret River with my wife, daughter and son. I set up The Margaret River Guide to assist people coming to Margaret River Western Australia to easily find what they are looking for. I also wanted to allow people to find activities they did not know about and to be able to openly comment on/ review businesses.

  1. Hello Benji,

Such a shame that I am already married….because getting married at Margaret River sounds amazing!! Wonder if David would ever consider getting married again 🙂 Love the photos and what is on offer for those that do consider getting married at one of the many different locations – I like the sound of the “Tradtitional Homestead” idea.

  2. Since we are writing about Margaret River Weddings, Others prefer the photographer to stay for parts of the reception to snap photos of family, the wedding party dances, and the bride and groom interacting with their guests. Even if you only want the photographer at the ceremony and for a few minutes afterward, you’ll have to book in advance because the entire day could very well be booked by another couple.

  3. This place is incomparable. Very unique and cozy place

  4. Hi Benjie

What a beautiful place to get married. We just got married overseas 3 months ago and all our guests were trying to convince us to have an Australian wedding as well. I guess they are looking for a good excuse to come to Australia… Margaret River would be a dream destination with so many things to explore in the area. Personally, I am not sure if I can face all the wedding preparations again though… our wedding dance alone took quite a bit of effort! By the way, I just made it public in my blog and my husband is not too impressed with me… although I think he is gorgeous!

  5. You make this sound so lovely! It’s great to see such a wide variety of venues in one area, and your appreciation for Margaret River shines through every time you write about it.

  6. Port Douglas Day Spa Fan says:

    Hi Benji,

I knew about weddings at wineries, but that even the breweries are providing venues for weddings in Margaret River now … very nice 🙂

Being in Port Douglas it is quite a long trip to Margaret River, but it’s definitely worth it. But only if I combine it with a spa visit 😉

  7. Hi Jayne, that will be the “Chick on a Stick” at Lawrence vineyard on Caves Road and yes it is lovely.
Jenny, I have heard that this is becoming fashionable. I feel you could just come on holiday anyway and ask some friends to join you 🙂

  8. Jayne Pleysier says:

I want to get married again just so I can come down and do it in Margaret River!! I think I would choose a Homestead for my wedding.
We have visited several wineries down in Margaret River and you can see that several are setting themselves up as wedding venues. One whch comes to mind straightaway (not mentioning names) is on Caves Road and has a big golden statue in a lake. Their toilets are phenomenal!

  9. I honestly couldn’t think of a better place to get married than Margaret River. It is such a beautiful area and there are so many choices. Mind you I am already married so too late for me. I might have to talk husband into a second wedding.
